Transport spectroscopy for electronic bands in carbon-based nanomaterials with weak-bond contacts

April 26 (Tue), 4PM, #1323(1st Floor. E6-2)
Dr. Myung-Ho Bae, Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science

As a consequence of their unique electronic band structures, carbon-based nanomaterials (CNMs) such as carbon nanotubes and graphene exhibit intriguing quantum transports when incorporated into field-effect transistors (FETs) in which the contact resistance represents the coupling strength between the nanosystem and the bulk system.  Here, we report a new aspect of CNM quantum devices that offers transport spectroscopy in the tunnelling regime of ~1 eV and directly reflects the electronic density of states. This was accomplished using physisorption contacts with the CNMs. Our first-principles calculations reveal that charge transfer is rare between the physisorption-contacted electrodes and CNMs. Therefore, the physisorption-contacted electrode forms a physisorption interface with a considerable vacuum gap and causes little disruption to the density of states of the CNM near the contact.
