Topic: Searching for axions in quantum vacuum birefringence

Abstract:

After the discovery of the Higgs particle, axions or axion-like particles (ALPs) are among the most favorite candidates for new physics beyond the standard model. The axion arises by promoting the constant governing CP-violation in the QCD Lagrangian to a dynamical field, as a solution to the long-standing CP problem [1]. Possible existence of the axion would have observable implications for both astrophysical phenomena and strong EM field laboratory environments.

We explore the role of possible axions and ALPs in emerging ultra-intense laboratory probes of quantum vacuum structure. Axions interact with applied EM fields via their coupling  to the pseudoscalar EM field invariant E·B. As a consequence virtual axion excitations may drive vacuum birefringence and dichroism, producing effects comparable to the long sought-after Euler-Heisenberg-Schwinger QED vacuum response [2].
