Optics, Photonics & Atomic physics

KAIST is the birthplace of the Korean optics community and has been the center of optics research in Korea. The optics group conducts full-scale studies on the theme of light-matter interactions, which cover a wide range of cutting-edge topics such as nanophotonics and plasmonics, quantum computing and quantum simulation, quantum optics and atomic physics, quantum electronics, nonlinear optics, biophotonics, THz photonics, semiconductor photonics, waveguide optics, and laser Physics. Recently, progress has been made particularly in photonic crystal nanolasers, optical nanocavities & nanoantennas, light scattering from nanostructures and subwavelength waveguides, quantum computing with Rydberg atom arrays, quantum control of an atomic ensemble, rapid production of large Bose-Einstein condensates, intense THz wave generation, broadband ultrafast & nonlinear spectroscopy, semiconductor hybrid photonic nanostructures, single photon sources with quantum dots, and exciton-polariton condensation in semiconductor cavities.
