메탈 광학은 빛과 금속 구조체의 상호 관계를 다루는 연구이며, 테라헤르츠 주파수 대역이 갖는 독특한 특성 때문에 최근 테라헤르츠 주파수 대역에서 메탈 광학 연구가 활발히 이루어 지고 있다. 

본 세미나에서는 먼저 테라헤르츠 주파수 대역에서 이루어지는 연구 및 응용을 소개하고 발표자가 진행한 2가지 메탈 광학 연구 결과를 소개하고자 한다.

 

1.Sub-wavelength Aperture Diffraction

파장보다 작은 구멍에서의 회절 현상은 금속이 갖는 특성 때문에 기존의 회절과는 다른 형태의 위상을 갖게 된다. 이는 구멍의 구조적 형태에 따라 달라지게 되며, 회절된 전자기파의 위상이 90도 빨라지거나 90도 느려질 수 있다. 이러한 위상 변화는 회절 패턴에도 직접 영향을 주게 되며, 이를 보이기 위해 크기가 다른 영의 이중 슬릿 실험을 수행하여 증명하였다. 또한 구멍을 이용한 근접장 이미징(near-field imaging)에서는 분광학적 특징이 달라질 수 있음을 추가로 소개 하고자 한다.

 

2. Frequency Conversion in Time-varying Metamaterial

시간에 대해서 특성이 바뀌는 물질에 전자기파가 진행할 경우, 주파수는 변환 될 수 있다.

이에 우리는 시간에 대해서 2개의 공명 주파수가 1개의 공명 주파수로 갑자기 합쳐지는 메타물질을 디자인 하여 주파수 변환에 적용하였고, 테라헤르츠 영역에서는 이루어 지기 힘든 주파수 변환 현상을 실험적으로 관측하였다. 이와 관련된 물리 및 실험결과를 소개하고자 한다.
