Topic: Simulation, design and fabrication of Josephson Parametric Amplifiers for axion search

Abstract:

Josephson parametric amplifiers (JPAs) are devices based on superconducting electronics and Josephson junctions that can amplify weak microwave signals with the added noise being limited by the laws of quantum mechanics. As such, these devices have been implemented in various developing quantum technologies, are routinely used in microwave quantum optics experiments, and can increase the efficiency of experiments focused on detecting weak signals, such as axion search experiments. By adjusting the geometry of the JPA in design, its figures of merit, such as the tunable bandwidth, instantaneous bandwidth, maximum gain and saturation power can be chosen. We show how to design for these parameters using a combination of classical finite-element simulations in COMSOL and numerical models based on the negative resistance model [1], and how to fabricate such devices in the cleanroom. We also show how a device with an increased nonlinearity can be used to generate on-demand itinerant non-classical states.
