Abstract:

How the interaction between galaxies and their environment affects the distribution of baryons and thus evolution of galaxies is a core issue in galaxy formation and evolution research. While galaxies accrete gas from the circumgalactic medium (CGM) and intergalactic medium (IGM) to fuel their star formation, galaxies also eject material and energy into their neighbor, setting up a cycle of feedback, accretion, and mixing throughout the halo. This process includes the activity of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at the center of galaxies.

In this talk, I will present an overview of my research program, which has evolved from studying SMBHs with event horizon scale observations to deciphering the thermodynamic properties of the CGM. Radio and (sub)millimeter experiments have been opening new windows in both regimes, and I will also introduce related instrumentation efforts that enable new observations.
