Abstract
Coherent coupling between light and high-frequency sound waves in integrated photonic circuits enables unique signal processing functionalities. This effect, known as Brillouin scattering, allows for frequency-selective amplification and phase shifts that are widely exploited in microwave photonics, optical signal processing, sensing, and the generation of low-noise microwave and optical signals.
This talk will explore stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in photonic integrated circuits as a versatile mechanism for strong light–sound interactions on chip. Different waveguide platforms supporting strong SBS will be compared, including implementations based on bulk acoustic waves and recent approaches harnessing surface acoustic waves. The talk will also discuss how engineering the optical density of states can be used to tailor and manipulate Brillouin interactions, opening new opportunities for signal processing and signal generation.
Speaker Bio
Dr. Moritz Merklein is Associate Director of Research at the Jericho Smart Sensing Lab, a Senior Research Fellow and Lecturer at the University of Sydney, and Vice-President of the Australian and New Zealand Optical Society. His research focuses on integrated photonics, on-chip Brillouin scattering, and optical and microwave photonic signal processing.
His contributions have been recognized through several awards, including the Rita and John Cornforth Graduate Medal, the Royal Society of NSW Jak Kelly Award, the Australian Institute of Physics NSW Medal for Postgraduate Excellence, and the 2020 Eureka Prize.
