ICC GLOBAL LECTURE SERIES

Rapid Prototyping: How To Build Almost Anything, Fast

Monday – Thursday 5–8 & 12–15 July, 1pm–3pm
Room 403, Creative Learning Building
All KAIST students, staff & faculty welcome.

This lecture course will be an entertaining and informative introduction for KAIST students and staff to the principles and
art of prototyping. Topics covered will be the role of prototyping in the design life cycle, the kinds of tools and techniques
that are available to perform rapid prototyping, and a number of relevant case studies. The coverage of rapid prototyping
tools will include in-depth looks at the specifications, capabilities and instructions for use of a number of commonly
available 3D printers, cutting tools and rapid prototyping machines. The case studies will cover basic parts and
assemblies for commercial and research purposes, and complex electromechanical one-of-a-kind prototypes created for
the Discovery Channel series "Prototype This!". By the end of the lecture series, attendees should have improved
knowledge of the following areas:
1. Principles of prototyping: what constitutes a prototype; what factors can and should be considered when developing a
prototyping strategy for the specific engineering task at hand; how to optimize prototypes for testing and evaluation.
2. Equipment commonly available to perform rapid prototyping, including those owned by divisions at KAIST; which
machines are available, the principles and mechanism of operation of each, the materials with which each can work, the
strengths and weaknesses of using each machine for example fabrication tasks, and how to design and prepare source
files for output on each machine.
3. What is possible to make rapidly, and what factors underly the concepts of “make” and “rapid”, such as number of postprocessing
and assembly steps, and time necessary to prepare, fabricate and ready the item for deployment.
It is hoped that the lecture series will help develop a culture of bespoke manufacturing and help attendees answer
questions like “How can I use these tools and techniques in my existing work?”, and “How can I improve, enhance and/or
expand my capabilities with the use of this technology?”.
