Physical Scientists play only a minor role in the study of the life science. The main purpose of biophysical research is to sketch the vast fields of neuroscience and life science from the perspective of a physical scientist and to indicate suitable problem areas for physicists, engineers, and applied mathematicians, for example, dynamic complexity in neural system, brain function and chaos & control in life system and others.

The discipline of nonlinear dynamics or chaos has been created in recent years such as universal paradigm and a mathematical tool to describe non-equilibrium nonlinear phenomena arising in nature. The applications of the theory of chaos have proven to be an exciting and fruitful endeavor, ranging over such fields as biology, engineering, and finance. The research group for non-linear dynamics and complex systems at KAIST concerns the theory of nonlinear dynamics, chaos, complex networks, and nonequilibrium phenomena arising in diverse complex systems. Especially research on complex networks ranging from the Internet to the cell provides us a new way of understanding complex systems. The group also focuses on engineering and medical applications of the ideas acquired in such studies. The research group provides regular seminar series, and is organizing a program of study for graduate and advanced undergraduate students and interdisciplinary studies.
